If your air conditioner is turning on and off every few minutes without ever completing a full cycle, something is wrong. This is called short cycling, and it is one of the more damaging things that can happen to your system during a long cooling season. Alongside short cycling, signs of a refrigerant issue include visible ice on the refrigerant lines or outdoor unit, reduced airflow from registers, and a system that runs but does not cool effectively. Adding refrigerant without finding and repairing the source of the leak is not a lasting fix. A Failing Capacitor

An Overheating Compressor
The compressor has a built-in thermal overload protector that shuts it down if internal temperatures get too high. When the compressor overheats and trips the protector, the system stops. After the compressor cools down, it restarts and the pattern repeats.
Causes of compressor overheating include restricted airflow around the outdoor unit from overgrown vegetation or enclosures, a dirty condenser coil that cannot shed heat effectively, very high outdoor temperatures, and internal compressor problems. Keeping the outdoor unit clear of debris and vegetation and making sure there is at least two feet of clearance around it on all sides is a simple preventive step.
A Thermostat Issue
A thermostat located in a poor position reads temperatures that do not accurately reflect the rest of the home. If it is near a supply register, a sunny window, or a heat-generating appliance, it may satisfy its set point almost immediately after the system starts and signal an early shutdown, even though the rest of the home has not been adequately conditioned.
A failing thermostat can also send erratic signals that cause the system to start and stop unpredictably. If other causes have been ruled out and the system still short cycles, evaluating the thermostat is the next step.
A Clogged Air Filter
A severely clogged filter restricts airflow to the point where the evaporator coil freezes, triggering the same shutdown-and-restart cycle as a refrigerant issue. Replacing a heavily loaded filter and monitoring the system afterward is always the right first step when short cycling is noticed. If the filter is clean and the system still short cycles, the cause is something else.
How Much Damage Can Short Cycling Actually Do?
Compressor replacement is one of the most expensive repairs in residential HVAC. Parts and labor typically run $1,200 to $2,500 or more depending on the system. On an older system, compressor failure is often the point at which replacement makes more financial sense than repair.
